Happy Flag Day from USA Flag Co.
The reason we celebrate Flag Day is that it’s the day that marks the adoption of the flag of the United States. This happened on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.
A Brief History of Flag Day
June 14, 1777
Old Glory’s birthday is June 14th. The US officially adopted the Stars and Stripes as the country’s national symbol on June 14, 1777.
The American flag is a staple in our nation’s history. June 14, 2019, marks the 242nd anniversary of the adoption of the current American flag design.
In 1916, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, made June 14 “Flag Day”, but wasn’t until 1946 that it was officially passed by an act of Congress.

JUNE 14, 1775
Establishment of the Continental Army
On June 14, 1775, the Continental Congress passed the following resolution:
Resolved, That six companies of expert riflemen [sic], be immediately raised in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia; … [and] that each company, as soon as completed [sic], shall march and join the army near Boston, to be there employed as light infantry, under the command of the chief Officer in that army.”
With this resolution, the Continental Congress adopted the New England Army of Observation, making it a “continental” army — a united colonial fighting force — that could represent all 13 colonies with the addition of the troops from the three middle colonies. The Continental Army thus became America’s first national institution.
I guarantee you that wherever we are going now, the path that we are set on is outlined in the vision that the chief and I put out just two weeks ago. Our country, our Army, will prevail in the future, in the next ten years, and we will prevail for the next 243 years as well.”
– Secretary of the Army Mark T. Esper, making a promise to the Soldiers and the Americans at the Army’s 243rd birthday celebration on the Capitol Hill.
Flag Day is also a special day for the United States Army because they celebrate their birthday on June 14th.
