Kitty Hawk is Americas longest-serving active warship and the worlds only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier, operating out of Yokosuka, Japan.

The U.S. Navy’s largest First Navy Jack, with the motto Don’t Tread On Me, flies high above an E-2C Hawkeye belonging to the Liberty Bells of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron One One Five (VAW-115), while transiting through the Straits of Malacca.

Aviation Boatswains Mate Airman Emerson Ibaldez from Pittsburgh, California, and Airman Jane Cruz from Austin, Texas, perform the morning ceremonial raising of the Navy Jack aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63).
A special memorial service is being held in remembrance of those lost during the events of September 11, 2001.
Under direction of the Secretary of the Navy, Gordon R. England, all U.S. Navy ships will fly the First Navy Jack in place of the Union Jack for the duration of the war on terrorism.
The First Navy Jack is a flag consisting of a rattlesnake superimposed across thirteen horizontal alternating red and white stripes, with the motto, Don’t Tread on Me.
Kitty Hawk is the Navys only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier operating out of Yokosuka, Japan.

Operations Specialist 2nd Class Michael McKenna from Providence, R.I., raises the First Navy Jack flag for the first time at morning colors, on Sept. 11, 2002, aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Thomas S. Gates (CG 51).
Gates is undergoing a maintenance availability at Naval Station Pascagoula.
